Design(ish): Toddler Room Turned Nursery

This room was the first room we tackled after moving into our home. It was one of the most difficult rooms to create a design for because it’s small, it has a strange layout, curved ceiling, and the walls are super-textured horsehair plaster. The previous homeowner painted the entire room glossy pink so we were challenged with turning it into a cool room for a 3-year-old boy.

The first thing we did was paint all the walls a shade of white that had blue undertones. I love how white makes a room feel so much bigger and fresher. The back wall is the first thing you see as you come up the main stairs so we wanted to do a fun mural. I originally purchased a decal for the wall but it felt too manufactured so we ended up using some painter’s tape and a few different shades of blue to create a one-of-a-kind mural. On the opposite wall, we used some black triangle stickers to create an accent wall and offer some contrast to the white. I found some fun plush taxidermies and these cute mountain range coat hooks to add some whimsy and stacked some wood cubes to create a makeshift bookshelf. A rustic faux hide rug anchors the grey crib/toddler bed and the cream ottoman and baskets give some much-needed storage space! Why do older homes have such small closets?! Some textured white button curtains help to soften things up and I’ve recently added an antique tufted wingback chair and ottoman to the room because shortly after finishing it we found out we were pregnant and would need to convert this room into a nursery.

This was my first time designing an entire children’s room and I had so much fun. I was so excited to take on this challenge and then the added challenge of making this room into a nursery and even now (post-baby) I’m constantly making small changes. My approach to design is that it’s never fully finished, I like to think that our spaces are constantly evolving just as our needs evolve.

What’s your personal approach to design? I’d love to hear from you all.
